this isnt Buddhist in the traditional doctrinal sense. Japanese Buddhism is very heavily influenced by Japanese folklore, shinto beliefs, etc its very syncretic. Also most modern Japanese people don't literally believe in sai no kawara from my understanding its more symbolic and emotionally resonant. the rituals around jizo give parents a way to work through their grief and loss. i feel its important to include that because without that context it can be a bit misrepresentative to what Japanese Buddhism is today.

Is there any estimate on how long this specific punishment is supposed to last? I’d like to imagine it’s not too long in comparison to worse ones

From around the 15th century, the place that children end up at within the Buddhist Hells became known as „Sai no Kawara“ in Japan, which is the Western riverbank of the “Sanzu River” that the dead have to cross in order to reach the afterlife. Some scholars have argued that this concept originates in the 12th century, when children under the age of seven generally did not receive a proper funeral. Instead, their bodies were disposed outside the village and oftentimes on riverbanks, which might be the reason why the children also appear in such a place within Hell imagery.
Nowadays, Jizō Bodhisattva is commonly associated with children in Japan, but his worship has taken on various shapes throughout history. While his role as a saviour in Hell goes back to at least the 9th century, the countless small Jizō statues that can be found all over Japan today are a rather recent phenomenon. Especially their placement alongside roads and pathways can be traced back to Japan’s Edo Period (1603–1868), during which Jizō worship became conflated with various local beliefs of wayfarer deities (dōsojin). His association with children in particular might stem from the fact that early stories describe him as a very young and small monk.

Easter philosophy is so funny to me, you died before your parents now stack stones while a demon beats you until you come back as a seahorse and understand sacrifice
