When a horse stops, it’s rarely defiance—it’s usually fear or uncertainty. Horses have long memories, and confidence takes years to build but only seconds to lose. That’s why we start small, reward the try, and support their effort. Punishment only deepens fear. Trust is earned, not forced. One of my trainers once said, “When we ask the horse to jump, they jump.” But that only works when the horse believes it can. It’s our job to make the task approachable, to reward effort, and to create a space where learning feels safe. Yes, they need to jump—but I’d rather my horse take a confident step forward than launch over a fence unsure and afraid. And when we do it right, something amazing happens. The horse starts to carry us. Like Sheik did today—after years away from cross-country, it was him supporting me over the fences. That’s the magic of trust.
