@philosophyminis: A few years ago, the philosophy-leaning wings of the internet were talking about something first posted on Reddit. It's the closest you can come to a modern morality meme. It's called the shopping cart litmus test. The test is whether somebody returns their shopping cart to the stack once they are finished with it. As the original anonymous poster put it: ‘Returning a shopping cart is an easy, convenient task, and one which we all recognise as correct and appropriate to do. It's not illegal to abandon your shopping cart, and no one will punish you for not returning the shopping cart. You must return the shopping cart because it is the right thing to do, and because it is correct.’ The original poster argued that the shopping cart litmus test can tell you a lot about somebody's moral character, because when you are not being watched, there is no hope of reward or fear of punishment. And how you behave then will reveal a lot about your moral fibre. But as far back as Plato, it was argued that morality just comes down to being watched. It has nothing to do with right or wrong facts, but social conformity and fear. Of course, this has many implications, for example, in religion, where an omniscient God is thought to be watching all the time, but also in the modern 24/7 surveillance state where someone, somewhere might be watching you. So do you always return the shopping cart after you're done? And do you think it can tell us a lot about who somebody is?

if you cannot return the shopping car, you are objectively a savage and should be executed on the spot

as a German this is kinda weird because everyone just returns it and not returning it would be seen as uncivil

Not a lot certainly. The simpler the test the most useless the answer you will get

I just do it because I know someone else would have to do it, why make someone working there have to do more, be grateful

For anyone saying "But it's someone's job!". No, it's someone's job to take the trolleys from the stacks outside to the stack inside. Its not their job to be hunting down loose trolleys because you were too lazy to take it to the stack.

i think the moral thing is not returning the cart so that the individual employed would continue preserving their job

No we don’t all agree. It’s the same as self checkout - it takes away jobs

No, because I’m a good guy - WHAT?! In the EU you have to insert a coin into the cart to use it. You get the coin back when you return the cart. But if you leave the cart by your car, the coin goes to the store employee who collects the carts.

I don’t agree. The shopping cart experiment is too low stakes. There are many low stakes acts that people don’t associate morality with, such as littering or spitting. These are cultural and upbringing. Only situations that involve serious harm can be used to measure one’s morality but unfortunately these are already governed by law and punishment

I don't. I used to, despite my mother's protests 😅 but then the stores started to weaponise the shopping cart return the same way they weaponised the queue. So now it depends on the shop

You return it because the only other place for it to go is in the middle of the parking space next to your car, and that makes you a huge wanker

Goes for not parking between the lines in a parking lot and slamming doors and making noise when others are trying to sleep.

I must be a god then. Not only have I returned every trolley I have ever used, I have on many occasions fixed the trolly stack since some people dont care if they put the correct trolley type in the rack that has an matching trolley.
