In that landmark 5-4 decision, the Court granted same-sex couples in all 50 states the right to full, equal recognition under the law. That ruling didn't just change history— it changed my history. It gave me the freedom to marry the person who makes my world brighter, without hiding, without compromise, without fear. What we have together is pure magic, which makes it all the more heartbreaking that some still see our love as something to condemn rather than celebrate. But here's what I know: love that asks for nothing more than the chance to exist openly and equally isn't radical. It's human. On our wedding day, surrounded by everyone who matters most, our dearest friend stood up and read these words from Justice Anthony Kennedy. They moved every person in that room to tears, and they still move me today. I'm sharing them again because some truths are worth repeating, especially when the world needs reminding: "No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization's oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law.
