I like to believe that the colours of the ghosts represent different intentions. The black ones represent unfinished business/unaccepting their end. The red both represent the soil they were buried in (canon) and the anger of their violent end. Then the white ghost just lets go.

So I am unsure if this was a deliberate decision on the part of the writers or it just didn't occur to them when they were writing it, but I was confused as to why the ghosts were so limited in what they could do to help Edith. Her mother's ghost in the beginning is able to talk and hold onto her, but the red ghosts in the house don't seem to be able to talk or do much of anything besides reveal themselves to Edith. Is something about the house stopping them from being able to act? Are they unable to speak because they were unalived instead of dying of disease like the mother did?
