@scriptinmotion: "28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds… that is when the world will end." The script for Donnie Darko (2001), written by Richard Kelly, was penned in just 28 days—the same number of days Donnie has to save the world in the film. Kelly was only 26 years old when he wrote it, and the story blends science fiction, teen angst, and metaphysical themes in a highly unconventional structure. The screenplay was initially rejected by multiple studios for being too strange and unmarketable. It includes dense references to time travel theories inspired by Stephen Hawking and Roberta Sparrow (a fictional author within the story). The original script also had Donnie's therapist more explicitly explaining his condition and the manipulated reality, but much of this was trimmed or left ambiguous, adding to the film’s cult mystique. Interestingly, the “Frank the Bunny” character was almost cut, but Kelly insisted on keeping him, knowing he was central to the script’s eerie and surreal tone.
