@wallstreetjournal: Highway 1 traverses 70 miles of mountains and cliffs above the blue Pacific, creating one of the world’s most dramatic road trips. But the vertiginous route, since opening in 1937, has suffered dozens of closures from hundreds of landslides, which often activate during winter rains. The road closure is deliberate and tyrannical, there is no reason it shouldn’t be fixed

Okay hear me out. Imagine if we could build towns on this land - and then - get this - the tax revenue from those towns would pay to maintain roads. California Coastal Commission is criminal.

Maybe the road should be closed permanently and have access by boat

nobody is gonna talk about when they decided to replace phipher bridge the same year paul’s slide and mud creek destroyed the road so people in the middle (me) were stuck for months. had to hike like 10 miles down a canyon to get groceries

The people I know that live there prefer the road closed they are tired of living in Disneyland and surfers dream of being the only one

Yet all the locals won't allow housing built there which could self sustain business. They cry for tourists but don't want anyone to live there but them

Truly hope they can figure out a solution that can be tolerant of slides. Big Sur is the most magical and beautiful place. It should be protected and preserved. We are all lucky to experience such a marvel.

Our government is incapable of fixing infrastructure. It has been over 900 days. In the same amount of time China has built 10,000 miles of high speed rail.

It’s a piece of land that really isn’t suited to sustain a road. It’s an evolving mountainside that frequently slides into the ocean.

Nepenthe is iconic! 🌅🍷✨ My favorite place to go watch the sunset when in the area. I would be so bummed if it closed.
