Most of my characters in my writing projects have really intuitive nicknames: Jess for Jesse, Kol for Kolbie, Kas for Kasper, etc. Vincent’s nicknames are also pretty intuitive to his name but he has more than one depending on who he’s talking to. Most people shorten Vincent to Vince but his girlfriend calls him Vinnie. Then there’s Mikhail who doesn’t go by a nickname except around family, then he’s Misha which is the typical Russian short form. I have a couple characters who’s nicknames come from the back half of their name: Nori for Lenore, Benny for Corbin, and Ari for Amari. Then theres a few characters that almost exclusively go by their nicknames to the point that they’re basically just their full names at this point Annie/Anastasia, Nelly/Penelope, Gwen/Gwendolyn. And some characters have no nicknames at all because it just doesn’t make sense for them: Nyx, Gavin, Dane, Scott, etc.

These are fantasy names Altair = Al and Lyra = Ly. These two characters are best friends so when calling each other, they’re using nicknames now to me, Al for Altair sounds good and can we used often throughout the book but I don’t know about Ly for Lyra I mean it’s already a pretty short name. Any suggestions?
