That’s exactly what happened to 76-year-old George Williams, and now, Jamaica’s Supreme Court says the government has to pay up $120 million. ______________ Williams was just 20 years old when he was arrested in 1970 on a murder charge. Authorities claimed he wasn’t mentally fit to stand trial, but instead of getting treatment or a fair process, they basically threw him away. He sat behind bars for 50 years, with 42 of those years passing without even a single review of his case. No trial. No hearing. Just silence. ______________ Now, Justice Sonya Wint Blair has ordered the Jamaican government to cut the check. Williams is set to receive $42 million in vindicatory damages, which is for the violation of his rights, and another $78 million in compensatory damages for everything he endured. ______________ Advocates who fought for his release say this is a bittersweet victory. Some are calling it “a slap in the face, but better than nothing,” pointing out that no amount of money can give him back his freedom, youth, or peace of mind. ______________ Williams was finally released in 2020 after human rights group Stand Up for Jamaica brought attention to his case.
