my theory is that the reason why asuka is hated by eva fans so much is because she is a girl with realistic rage. rei is blindly obedient to commander akari, which makes her more palatable as a female character. asuka, on the other hand, has narcissistic qualities in order to protect herself, and pairing that with the fact she’s a woman, many fans (usually men) hate her for it.
