Oh my friend Eric. We just knew you would win. I have cried since Friday at 11:30am. I knew this day was coming. And yes, my heart is broken into pieces. It started with 25 cent shots at Chantilly’s and somehow turned into 18 years of solid friendship. We talked every morning before work about breakfast, life, school, whatever. And food? Oh, food was always part of the conversation. From gossiping over lunch to ordering the ELove special shrimp & wings at DSpot, we stayed hungry together. We loved to explore new restaurants…especially soul food. Lately, we kept trying to figure out why the mac and cheese from one spot always came out burnt. One day he said, “I looked through my phone and it’s just a bunch of burnt mac and cheese pics.” That’s who we were. He always called me his little white sister. One time I dyed my hair brown and peeked through his classroom window. He said he thought some random white lady was staring at him. Just this Monday I told him I had a sunburn and he looked at me and said “White.” That was our kind of funny. He never taught me to swing out no matter how many times I asked, but we’d always watch the latest line dances in his class and try to keep up. I’m really gonna miss walking into his room trying to solve a math problem just for him to say I was wrong even when I was right. He used to tell me all the time, “That dude is not the one.” And I would listen and he would be right. He was my big brother, my emergency contact, my “sit down you drunk and doing too much” friend. If my tire went flat, if my battery died, or if I just needed to vent, he was there. He really was that friend. The kind that’s rare. I used to joke with him, “We would’ve stayed in trouble if we really grew up together.” I prayed for a miracle. I really did. I kept telling him to keep fighting. I’m so grateful I got to spend time with him this week. He gave so much of himself to everybody around him. I’m especially grateful that he got to enjoy his 50th birthday. He had so much energy that night and danced the whole party. He touched so many lives…students, dancers, friends, coworkers. Anybody who met him felt that energy. That joy. That heart. So go ahead and blow the whistle and clack your fan all the way in heaven. Make them smile up there just like you did down here. To his wife and kids, I will always be there. No matter what you need, I’m a phone call away. I love y’all.
