Eritrea, often called the "North Korea of Africa," is one of the most secretive and tightly controlled countries in the world. 🔴 Governance: Since gaining independence from Ethiopia in 1993, Eritrea has been under the rule of President Isaias Afwerki. In over 30 years, no elections have been held, no opposition parties are allowed, and the country has no constitution in force. It's a one-man rule with no checks and balances. 🛑 Press Freedom: Eritrea is ranked as one of the worst places in the world for journalists. Independent media is banned, and journalists who speak out risk arrest, torture, or even death. The government controls all news and information, and citizens have very limited access to the internet or outside media. 🚨 National Service: One of the most controversial issues is Eritrea’s mandatory national service, which is supposed to last 18 months but often stretches for years or even decades. Young people are forced into military or civil service with very low pay, harsh conditions, and no choice to leave. It’s been described by many as modern-day slavery. 🚷 Migration: Because of these conditions, thousands of Eritreans — including children — risk their lives every year to escape the country. They cross deserts, face traffickers, and brave the Mediterranean Sea just to find freedom. Eritreans are one of the largest refugee groups in the world. ⚖️ Human Rights: The UN has documented serious human rights abuses in Eritrea: Arbitrary arrests Torture Indefinite detention Forced labor Repression of religion and speech Yet, the government continues to deny all accusations and refuses to cooperate with international investigations. 📣 Why should we care? Because silence is complicity. Africa cannot be free if parts of it are still in chains.
