He isn’t even wrong here buddy. Every YA novel is ‘secret princess who lost her kingdom but is also an assassin and then every male loves her for no reason’

It’s just so insanely lazy to say there are “no ya fantasy or sci-fi novels for boys”, like you literally have to be purposely dense to say that

This man has clearly never spoken to a bookseller. We have YA books that appeal to all kinds of readers and can point you to them in our stores.

It's weird because I'm a boy and I've been reading SciFi and Fantasy for 43 years and I haven't run out of books yet. And I managed that feat without knowing who this guy is until today.

I wouldn’t classify it as “for boys”, but I agree with his take nevertheless. Most fantasy these days seems to be about female protagonists, which like it’s fine, that doesn’t mean the book is bad, but frankly put I’d like some more male protagonists.

As a female reader, there is a point to the argument that the publishing industry is leaning heavily on female protagonists. Which, I love a great female lead, but I went to B&N the other day and on their tables up the center aisle (dozens of books) I found only two fiction books with a male protagonist. I was surprised how uneven it was the other way. I was shopping on Amazon Kindle Day last time and went 3 pages in before finding a Male detective instead of a Female. I wish the industry could pick a middle ground rather than careening from one extreme to another. I mostly read Mysteries and Fantasy so not sure about YA. 🤷🏻‍♀️But if Netflix adaptations are anything to go by, it's pretty heavy on the Female leads to. Which again, those stories are great. But variety would be nice.
