Thank you for saying this! As a psychologist, I hate it when other health care providers say we just “talk to people.” It’s a lot harder than people think it is.

Thank you! Your brain is constantly ON as a therapist. It is HARD intellectual work.

As a therapist, the best docs I’ve worked with have this level of understanding & reverence of the therapy process. Your patients are lucky to have you!!

Silence during therapy enrages me…I need someone to ask me questions or I can’t speak. I always tell them this upfront but sometimes they forget

Absolutely! Therapy is guidance to the solution — not the solution itself.

When my therapist is quiet and „use“ silence I just zone out or dissociate lol

What do you recommend to someone that is in a program that discourages asking questions? I love all these questions and feel frustrated that I am not supposed to ask any.

This is super interesting! As a highly therapized individual w an undergrad in psych, I kinda hate the way therapists can’t/wont be direct with me (wrt your first observation). I wonder if you could say more on why you are trained to avoid directness as default?

About your first point, Is there a mode of therapy where the therapist can be direct? I can take it I don't want to talk around it I want to work through it head on. Can look at the roots of the problem through that knowledge?

As a therapist, THANK YOU. This is so validating. I am glad our pay is finally starting to reflect that. Still a long way to go, but it’s HARD work. I didn’t feel competent until 8 years into practice.

I don’t think to prescribe a drug is so easy; for example I suffer from severe OCD and severe anxiety and I’m on 150 mg Sertraline rn and it’s supposed to be good for me, but it’s giving me more anxiety and 0 help for my OCD since I started 3 years ago (and the psychiatrist knew about my anxiety) so…

I hate the silence I know what they’re doing lol. I’ve legit called out my therapist and said “are we doing that silent thing?”

I told a client why silence is an intervention and they cried. Realized they’ve never said anything without just letting it exist in quiet space

to point #3 - self-disclosure builds intimacy and is so powerful. it can cause harm when done by unskilled therapists but a skilled, compassionate therapist knows that telling clients our true feelings about them or ourselves, after a strong therapeutic alliance is established, can be the most transformational thing we do for them.

silence is a gift because this world refuses to give us time to think or reflect. we are forced to get our thoughts out quickly in order to not take up time and space. therapy (and the best of friendships) counters this
