There are a number of cars that make this task complicated. Many newer european cars for example require you to tell the computer the battery was replaced. These vehicles adjust the charging of the battery based on age, amperage, and other factors. Also some vehicles will fail to start when the battery is swapped. BMW has a few like that.

Never heard of that myth, where did you hear that? I mean depending on the car you may have lost your radio settings.

Some cars need an OB2 pair tool, but that’s to maintain electrical seat memory, radio preference ,and other settings on modern cars but I mean if your car is dead dead who cares 😂

Not a myth . It’s manufacture specific. A Hyundai will have no problem . A Honda will be upset . Some Toyotas will throw a fit . A Mercedes will throw a tantrum and play dead . Depends on the year , model and make 🙄

Maybe on a Hyundai. Try that on a newer German car and your battery will live a short life.

It's not a myth, most European cars need to be told that they have a new batteries so the charging system will adapt back to a new battery and many times there's a pile of calibrations that need to be done such as windows seats sunroof etc. so in many cases you can't just plop a battery in although the car will start and usually run fine you may have lost Window function seat functions and the battery may not last as long if it's one of the ones that needs to be told there is a new battery, and you hooked up the negative battery cable first instead of the positive which isn't always the best way to do things you hook the positive cable up first and negative one second in case you accidentally touch ground

I mean I had a Toyota that freaked out after changing the battery. the myth started because the computer sets itself for a certain voltage and amperage. when I battery starts to die the computer normally recalibrates itself. when you put the prober voltage and amps the computer can freak out for a bit.

yea cant just do that on a Mercedes or bmw and some other models. must be set to new battery. but untill you get to $800 battery level ur good 👍

A 2007 Hyundai Entourage minivan will lose all presets on the radio if the battery is removed without keeping power on it. Also a 2007 Entourage’s governor will kick on at 107mph. 🤣 It had a great engine in it😏

Not a myth. In many modern cars you have to go in and reset monitoring software or the battery will die prematurely. It’s in the manual.

No one says you “can’t”. There are systems that require initalization and basic settings after a battery disconnect. Some vehicles loose KAM memory and adaptive settings. Using a memory saver just avoids having to do this.

It really depends on the car.
Some Hondas will lock the radio if you do that, for instance.

German cars have adaptive charging, meaning the alternator will increase power output as the battery ages to deal with its diminishing capacity. When installing a new battery, you reset the battery settings.

Besides losing radio station and settings like seat positions for different drivers, some cars will need to be reprogrammed to the key fobs.

the only real "issue" is some cars have that radio pass code, and with my car I can tell that my TCM has to re-learn how I drive. also theres newer VAG cars that have to marry the new battery to the ECM and the only people that have the stuff to do that is dealers and some shops

When swapping batteries in a BMW you have calibrate the computer to the new battery. The computer regulates the power as the battery gets older

Some newer vehicles do freak out, but a lot of those it's just drive/idle it for 20 min to reset the computer.. Some will freak out until you actually enter in serial numbers and force reset the comp and stuff, but lets be honest, if you own a car like that, you're probably in a tax bracket that wouldn't be worried about saving money by changing the battery yourself.. >.>

You use a memory saver to keep power to your radio to not lose settings. Or in the case of Hondas, to keep your radio from going into theft mode. You will need a code to unlock it. If you didn't buy the Honda new, chances are you don't have to code and will have to get it from the dealership.

i have always been told that usually it’s just prolonged loss of power is the problem like if you have the battery disconnected for more that 15 min then newer vehicles will need certain things reprogrammed. But if you are doing a quick swap it shouldn’t be a problem.

if you dont reset the battery monitoring system as ford calls it, the car will think the battery is lower charged than it is and overcharge it, which will reduce its life. ive also had a hybrid c-max that i didn't reset it on that would intermittently not start afterwards, fixed after i just reset it
