The book is written in a way so reader’s squint to realize they are being lied to and manipulated by Humbert’s words. It is beautifully written, but the truth of the matter is horrifying and all Humbert is doing is painting the story to his own liking. Hence, we never hear from Dolores and hence she always seems to have “wanted it”. Readers are supposed to step back and realize he’s essentially kidnapped a child and wants us to believe his own fantasy that it’s okay. The author also makes this clear in the very beginning in the author’s note, he is not endorsing Humbert’s actions but actually laying them out for us to scrutinize.
