This is 100% legit. If you listen to the full original version, it’s actually about a couple drifting apart even though they still love each other. It’s more grounded, about choosing to walk away for the other person’s sake. Unfortunately, they scrapped it because Max Martin, the Swedish producer behind the song, prioritised melodic flow over literal meaning, which is super common in pop music.

The general consensus is that the Backstreet Boys did not change the "original" lyrics of the hit version of "I Want It That Way." Instead, the story is that the record label wanted them to change the lyrics because they felt the existing ones didn't make sense.

It’s called No Goodbyes and Jive made them redo it because Max Martin is Swedish and spoke broken English and the OG literally makes no sense. They made it make sense but they loved the OG better
