It’s wild to me the servers still take your card in America. We have mobile machines in Canada (and I’m sure other places). I never hand my card to anyone

As a former waitress, OP definitely NTA. Your tips are based on your customer service and if you don’t put the proper care into your customer service, you don’t get tipped for it end of story

As a former server, just don't tip anything if you are not satisfied with the service. Tipping a few cents is just as rude as the server's behaviour towards OP.

Something funny happened to me when I ordered take out. I wanted pizza and one cup of ice cream. I got two because he wanted to thank me for ordering every few weeks. Well, I was already planning to give him a big tip before he arrived and then it looked like I paid for the extra cup and he got just the rest of the amount. But the money wasn't for the extra cup at all. We were both kinda dumpfounded 😂

NTA. You’re supposed to discreetly tell the customer there was a problem with the card and take a new one. She treated her customers like criminals. Lesson learned 🤷

Yeah, but why is she required to pay 2 other employees out of her supposed salary? That shouldn’t be a thing at a job.

I wouldn't have tipped at all, 83 cents was just too much. Anyway, it is really dangerous to give your card, they should bring a posnet (or a machine, I'm sorry, english is not my first language) to the table.

NTA. You’re tipped based on service. When you rudely accuse your customer of trying to steal, it tends to have an effect on your tip.

Maybe we shouldn’t have tips as a system of payment for employees

Server knew she was in the wrong w/ her behavior, otherwise she would’ve gotten the mgr when OP asked. 83¢ was too much imo.

"sir, we have an issue with this method of payment, please come with me to sort this out 😄" Was all she needed to say, that way she rules out a scamm and spares the client from shame

I really hate the tip system and I don’t even live in America. It’s so exploitative. Someone can find fault with you for anything and they CAN tip you but don’t HAVE to which is the biggest influence on whether or not you get to eat this week? Just pay your staff a liveable wage. I don’t understand

I was a bartender for over 18 years. She was incredibly rude. Although, I wouldn't treat a customer like this, if it happened to me, my move would have been to speak to the manager before filling out anything!
