Our current decline in trades is absolutely destroying us. Average age of tradesmen is 40-45…my lord that’s horrible! It should 10 years lower! Public schools should be advocating kids not choosing college to look at this as something to fall back on AND make great money and stay debt free! Bernie and Trump want good little doctors and factory workers, but we need people to work on toilets, tubs, sinks, septic tanks, cars, our lights, electrical grid, everything that makes our world

Their vision is pre-civil war America. Remember how their advice to lower egg prices was for people to get their own chickens and have their own eggs? Pre-civil war, one of the parties had a huge section of their voter base attached to the philosophy of 'self-sustain'. It was, in their mind, the ideal economy. Ofc, it was easier back then when society was so simple. And ofc, it was a good thing they ended up failing as a political movement because said movement would have left the US like a third world country. Organized labor is much superior for a country's GDP growth than a self-sustain society.

I really wish America brought back the vocational school program we had when my grandparents were young. at the end of the day I get paid more because the HVAC industry is starved for workers but all the trades need more people but less and less people younger than me are willing to go blue collar.

Dude. The trades aren’t the only solution. We need arts, science, teachers, social workers etc etc. we have a problem with where money is being allocated and we have issues with our priorities in this nation. Trades are good jobs. I am a union plumber. But it ain’t for everyone, and I don’t want a whole world full of my coworkers.

america just need a vocational system like in Germany for the trades. you work 3-4 days per week and rhe other days you're in school learning not only more about the trade but general things like workers rights and economics maybe even a foreign language.

20 year old union electrician here. Problem is that it does take a lot of time to develop actually good tradesmen. My apprenticeship is 5 years and that’s a turn off for most people
