@ginad129: Replying to @Jennifer MurphMan this is the core of the reason why we can’t comp to classics, yes. #writingcommunity #writertok #bookeditor #writingabook #publishing
Can you comp to a graphic novel that has a similar setting or theme to my novel? They’re both inspired by the same source material an old universal horror movie.

Personally I don’t think anyone should be publishing a novel that doesn’t have extremely long tangents about the Battle of Waterloo and the Paris sewer system but maybe I’m just an intellectual

I think an awful lot of new sales of classics are purely for bookshelf dressing 🤷♀️people also should remember that at the time those books gained popularity it was a rather limited social class that had the means and ability to read, and most people heard the stories via retelling and word of mouth

Honestly feel like this is too polite lol. Id remind authors that the reason those books are classics isn’t because of their old timey style, it’s because they just *the best* books ever written. That’s why they are classics. You are not Jane Austin. Anybody today who is isn’t writing “comp” anything.

Also, there are plenty of modern book inspired by/influenced by classics. Which means there should be plenty of modern comps to any book you write that you feel is similar to a classic.

For comps, I want to give an accurate representation, but I can't find something recent that is exactly like what I am writing. However, I can combine various new comps to give the right vibe (I.e. the setting/elements of comp A, the dark vibes of comp B, the adult version of YA comp C, etc.) would that work?

had an agent tell me that a query should show how your book addresses and relates to modern concerns when it's historical fantasy. They also gave a link to their agencies for pay query package. This is ugh, right?

I’m new to the reading world, what exactly is a comp title? I’m confused

I draw inspiration from one classic, The Handmaid’s Tale, specifically the enslavement of women for reproduction purposes. Should I still not use that as comp title? I haven’t seen that many use that “trope” in books still. I know tropes shouldn’t be comp titles but I still want to emphasise this in my query letter. Should I just leave out Handmaid’s Tale?

also publishing was so different back then and writers were often writing to the publishing conventions of their time. a lot of what we think of as classics (A Tale of Two Cities, War and Peace) weren't sold as these huge books that you would keep on your shelf. you would get a short section at a time. that's why those books are so long

Speaking of history, today I saw a video talking about Del Ray publishing and how it shaped fantasy in the late 70s - how much does knowing the history of publishing in your target genre help with publishing? (Like finding comp titles, seeing if your book fits the current market, etc)

This is when to break that rule, when it shows relevance and only if true.

can you comp a NA (dystopia in my case) to a YA or should it be comped only to other NAs and up?

Can you use a self published book as a comp title? Or do agents prefer comps that are for traditionally published?

As someone who loves classics, I love your perspective. Like with a lot of your vids, I appreciate that you point out the business of writing and publishing. Yes, you can write for yourself (and can do so and end up being published) but being published is as much skill of understanding the market as it is an art

So true. In my bookstore we have a classics area but those books don’t sell even close to as much as modern books. We are talking 20 to 1.

Do you have any advice on word counts per chapter? I know agents have ideal word counts for total book length, but what about chapters? Assuming lower for YA? They tend to feel shorter, but I’ve never counted 🙈😅

I comped my three modern books but so many agents were mentioning wanting stories like the Haunting of Hill House for example so I comped that too and I’ve been having a lot of success

I did a retelling but I never bothered to use it as a comp. those who know will get the hidden references but the modern twist was more important

I think comping to classics says more that you understand books academically more than commercially. And you're auditioning to sell books, not study them.

I am writing a series that I describe as "The Dubliners" by James Joyce, except set in a Tom Waits song. They are weird stories.
