In Japanese, 🙄 doesn't mean eye rolling, rather it's another way to express thinking.

As a native English speaker I’ve never seen the “😇” emoji as innocent. It’s at least passive aggressive

I wonder if the 👀 thing relates to how we read—in the west, we read left to right, so if we’re looking to the left, it feels like something is “off” cuz it’s almost like we’re “looking” backwards; vs if you read right to left, the eyes facing left would align with where you just finished looking (I.e., the gaze started on the right and made it all the way to the left = the full field of view was taken in and “finished” looking)

Me and my friend use 🐙 as hugs and hearts. I think it started as a typo when one of us meant to type a heart emoji lmao

Young people still use XD in Poland, and it's considered outdated everywhere else, but we've been using it ironically. When you see polish people using it, it doesn't necessarily mean they're cringe millennials.

Japanese people are emoji pioneers. the word emoji comes from there and before emojis were in Unicode the Japanese phone vendors had their own encodings.
