Personal view, but since we know Maira can and do…what if Gandalf’s whole reason for all that he did was because he had fallen in love with Nienna? I know the books doesn’t flatly state he did, but consider this- He learned pity through Nienna by seeing what she went through daily because of others, while he also learned compassion through her by seeing that she didn’t harbor any ill intent towards them, but deeply cared about them enough to have hope for them. And most men in love want to protect the one they love and “fix” their problems for them. Gandalf’s personality traits show he’s loyal, wise, compassionate, and acts with absolute intent. So it’s reasonable to assume he kept an eye on the ring for years and involved himself in the fellowship to lessen the burden on Nienna by helping to destroy the most prevalent thing causing years and years of malice and harm on all creation, even if it was only to make her smile a little more and feel all that misery a little less. Rather this love was romantic or platonic on his part, I can’t say, but I do think that love was reflected in how Gandalf viewed Frodo’s journey with the ring and why he was so persistent in teaching others to be more compassionate, and to think before acting. Kind of a fix the now and prevent tomorrow thing. Maybe it’s because Gandalf and Nienna compliment eachother traits so well, or maybe I just want Gandalf to have a little love too, but either way, that’s how I choose to see that.
