@the.tired.dad: I hope this finds the right people so they can avoid the mistakes I made in the beginning. I’ve been a dad for almost nine years now, and my wife and I have worked through all these problems. We don’t hold any resentment toward each other anymore. Without these mistakes, I wouldn’t be the dad I am today. I wouldn’t be the partner I am today. But I’ll be honest, when we take a trip down memory lane just to remind ourselves how far we’ve come, I do feel a pit in my stomach. I think about the times I wasn’t there for my wife in the beginning of motherhood. No one told me about postpartum. All of our family brushed it off like it was just a normal thing that happens. But it didn’t feel normal. If I had been educated on it, I would’ve handled it better. I would’ve viewed it less as an attack on me as a new dad and more as something my wife was dealing with on her own. Sometimes you just have to go through it to get to the other side. Everyone’s situation and dynamic is different, so nothing truly prepares you. We need to have more open discussions about how a baby changes your marriage and your dynamic. I can speak from the dad’s side, but more women need to speak about their side as well. It always works both ways. Having a baby is such an amazing experience, such a beautiful experience, but it’s uncharted territory. And although your marriage may never look the same as it did before the baby, with the right intentions, you can make it stronger. Keep showing up.
