Sridevi in Chandni (1989), with Lana del Rey's unreleased single "Trash Magic". Chandni was released in 1989. It was deemed unconvential as it covered romantic themes rather that violent, which was really popular. Chandni tell the story of a woman at the forefront of the love triangle. Directed by Yash Chopra, he uses white imagery as a sense of innocence, heeding that the lead female character is an innocent character and a kind person. He also uses the imagery of red roses to represent love. Sridevi stars as the lead heroine Chandni. By the time the film was released Sridevi was the first female superstar to earn as much as her male counterparts and rivaled them in box office and popularity. For Chandni, she earnt a record breaking rs. 1.5 million. This was a watershed moment in itself as such a phenomenon has not been replicated. Sridevi shines in of her best roles, she is really subtle and it's fantastic. The film was released in 1989, and broke the trend of action films and by the 90s, almost every major success was a romantic picture. Chandni's success revitalised the career of Yash Chopra and reaffirmed Sridevi's position as the top female star of the era.
