@internet.anthropology: What will happen when we find a tech solution to ‘negative emotions’ #internetanthropology #anthropology #tech #Ai #affectionateintelligence #affecttheory #stoicism #soma #amniotictech #returntothewomb #smarthome #warmtech
So basically they're developing technology to manipulate on an even more subliminal level. People mustn't forget tech companies don't do *anything* for the good of humanity. They do it for money and for money only. A system that is only sold once to their customers is not a good cash cow without a way of ensuring that money will keep flowing the way that tech companies want. So welcome to being gently nudged towards the best aligned choices in all areas of your life.

it sounds less like "emotional regulation technology" and more like extra invasive data collection+personalized services
they aren't regulating your emotions, they just read what you feel and give you ads
same thing they've been doing for many years, just even more invasive this time

Evolution would not have wasted time giving us emotions if they didn’t serve a purpose - they are there for: survival, motivation, decision making, bonding etc. The negative are just as important as the positive.

This sounds interesting and I could see it happening, but not yet, at least not at this stage. Capitalism thrives on amplifying and exploiting people’s negative emotions, insecurities and fears. Entire industries are built on this model (media, beauty, fashion, health etc) and it’s still growing strong. But we’re also beginning to see a growing need of leading more sheltered, more curated, simpler lives. So companies will adapt to this too (and even highjack it in some ways).

Although it does sound “helpful” at first, it reminds me of the novel Brave New World, creating a passive or emotionally “neutral” society. Rage and anger can be vital for political change and I fear this would be eradicated.

This is a really cool advancement and i think it could be beneficial for some people, but erasing negative emotions erases our humanity

get me out of here 😔 :
i've already always vehemently opposed the "smart home" concept because I don't feel like being commodified as a product (data) for companies to sell to other companies. this would take being commodified to a whole new level. i would rather spend the rest of my life depressed than live in a home that's manipulating me and my life in every possible way.

This is awful. The little things is what makes us human. Telling a friend about the bad coffee you had, making an appointment to care for others, figuring out emotional regulation and how to discuss instead of argue, they're all part of learning experiences that make us wiser and more knowledgeable. Perfection ruins learning, regulating, community, and living

When anger frustration etc are labelled as "negative" and a system is put in place to AVOID those very normal natural emotions, it will cause all sorts of mental and physical health issues. Emotions are supposed to be felt not avoided.

Sounds "interesting" but it's not aligned with customer needs at all. Zero chance it'll ever happen - not a future scenario we should bother being concerned with.

This is such a bad idea 😭 humans need to feel negative emotions, not only is that what makes us human and and just happy robots it helps us regulate how we act when we have negative emotions.
