I’m writing this scene right now. But I wasn’t thinking about it this way. I was thinking about it more in the way of not quite being ready to make the big decision and needing another push — which comes a few chapters down the road. But now that you’ve shared this concept, I’m going to look at it from a new perspective and see what happens. Thanks as always. 🙏🙏🙏

I have a refusal of the call of adventure but in the second chapter they immediately accept it. 🥲 Should I stretch the „refusal“ more out or is that okay ?

The refusal of the call has to be handled incredibly well, if not the character can be seen as too passive and no one really enjoys reading about passive characters

Can resurrection count as a "call to adventure" in this case? And, well, a wish to stay dead as that call's "refusal"?

One of my MCs is gonna withhold information that would not only potentially let her find her old best friend, but also would drag someone she is starting to grow affection towards the same “adventure”. The MC would feel bad and go along with it, but she wants to just live a quiet life so she lies and goes so far as to help the other MC go back to her respective home. And since it’s gonna also be a romance, I CANT WAIT TO DO THIS.

I think I do this unwittingly most of the time, and mostly because I either use multiple calls to action for multiple shifting goals, or just have an escalating series of calls to action for the same ultimate goal. Having multiple calls to actions necessarily leads to the first couple being rejected.

I am writing the first book in a series in which the characters refuse the call to adventure until the very end, tackling themes like the nature of duty, redemption, and what it means to put your life aside for the greater good. Your video has given me hope that this is something readers would find interesting!

I just realized that I did a fake version. My heroine moans and groans before accepting and then it turns out that it was a warning outing not the real call.
