for commander, you can typically play proxies in stores btw, at my commander night, when I asked about it the organizer said since wizards printed official unofficial thousand dollar packs the axed any policy they had against proxies.

I love when people get to use proxies because it allows them to play but for my decks personally I like not playing proxies because it makes deck teching more of a struggle and I have to make cuts in certain places and find cards I usually wouldn’t play but and up working well which in my personal experience has ended up with some really strong budget decks or a cheap deck that I slowly upgrade over time into something strong just watching that growth in my deck and the hunt for the cards I want and need are very fun for me and I feel pride in a deck I have upgraded and come to know better and better

it changes the game, makes the progression different. Cost is a natural barrier which makes it so you can play against people of the same lvl of involvement with the hobby and you both will have similar power lvl of the deck. I personally would choose all proxies but there's some interest in paid model, it has an interesting progression and rewards. The problem only shows up when you start mixing. If you have allproxy deck and you bring it to a game with all legit, they gonna feel cheated because in the progression system they consented to - it is cheating.

Literally been full proxies my decks. I have 19 bracket 4 decks I've spent less than $100 each for. If hasbro and the community/scalpers/collectors keep gouging the prices, I will never buy a real card or pack again.

as someone who is a board gamer, it sounds like "print and play" board games, where designers essentially give you a pdf of a game and you make it from scratch. sometimes free, but very often low cost. if its the same kind of vibe I may be able to delve into MTG more, because i frankly cant afford another hobby 😂😂

i think it depends on context rly i played against one guy at an LGS who had his entire deck just be proxies and I was like xdd why are you even alive in front of me rn ur so cringe but if you have a couple proxies idrc there's also ppl I draft cubes with and all the cubes are proxied just bc the drafting part is what matters

I feel like the restrictivenes forces me to think more creatively when playing. I got precons and budget decks that do beat proxies time to time. But my group is like 8-10 friends from so maybe that’s why it’s not that bad. Or they’ll power it down a bit.

fr you can get a starter deck for about £15 but £200 for 30 boosters is way too much and makes anyone wanting to start playing say no because of how much it will cost in the long term as all the hype around cards recently has caused prices to mainly go up not down even smaller card games have gotten worse with prices I definitely feel like it's not just a card thing though as the amount of money your expected to put into almost all hobbies and collectibles is going up by way more than normal inflation rates would need

I personally don’t like using proxy cards but have no problem with my pod using them, also you make a very good point with making the game fun. Having access to anything without paying for it allows your creativity to grow and play fun things.I build things online to test them I feel like that’s pretty close to proxy cards allowing me to test before I buy

If you’re just using it one on one there’s no problem with that but if you use it like tournaments and stuff like that, that’s a problem

If you’re playing amongst yourselves and non competitively proxies shouldn’t be an issue. The hobby should be accessible. When playing competitively, you should definitely have an official printing of the card.
