my immediate thought was all the for-profit prisons starting to lose money as a result of this, worming their way deeper into the legal system to make sure sentences are longer and harsher to pump their numbers up

Look at the clearance rate of violent crime investigations in Metropolitan areas of America. It's barely 50%. I don't think that we're committing less crime; I think we're prosecuting less criminals.

Years ago Freakonomics explored a correlation between Roe v Wade and the drop in crime. I wonder how things might change in 20 years now that we’ve lost abortion rights.

Almost every time I hear a sentence it doesn’t come close to the crime. Lots of probation or time served

The prison population has nothing to do with actual crime or security. It's a political choice about what is punished and how much.

Interesting because as a nurse I’ve been worrying about our aging baby boomers and the inevitable fact that hospitalization rates are about to skyrocket. 🤔

Believe it or not, this is because Lead was removed from the air. 1980s high crime could be tracked to the introduction of lead to gasoline. After it got removed, an entire generation grew up clean of lead, and crime went down because of that.

I heard there was a correlation to access to abortion and divorce. Families had kids they wanted and could care for in a healthy way. Less crime.

Is it that? Or did places like Chicago just stop going after or prosecuting crime? I am reminded of Kim Foxx's tenure as Cook County State's Attorney in which her office declined to file charges against gang members in a fatal shooting. Calling it, “mutual combat.” And not only have Chicago police been told not to list certain violent crimes, but as violent crimes occur, they are encouraged to list them as misdemeanors. This occurs in almost every one of the top 10 cities in the US.

crime has fallen so much. just look at New York, in 1990 New York City had 2245 murders and last year it was 377.

Does anyone wonder why the sudden push to incarcerate immigrants and the building of Alligator Aushwitz? Government pays per bed filled at prisons. They WILL find a way to put US citizens behind bars too. The prison industry is just too big not to.

Prisoners will be replaced by immigrants waiting to be expelled. Maybe one of the reasons behind the change in policies: you gotta maintain the turnover of corporations running the jail system.
