Tradisi ini telah berlangsung selama ratusan tahun dan menjadi bagian penting dari budaya masyarakat Riau. Meskipun ada klaim dari beberapa pihak bahwa pacu jalur berasal dari Malaysia, terutama di media sosial, klaim tersebut tidak berdasar dan tradisi ini tetap merupakan warisan budaya Indonesia.
