Being performative is authentic… especially if you authentically want to make something great. I don’t think “authentic” means “low production” it means “does this seem like something the artist wants to do or that they have to do.”

I get what you mean but I think you can be performative and still authentic though. Gaga for example is very authentic, even when she’s doing a persona or wearing a strange outfit. That style of expression is authentic to her and her vision.

I don’t agree. “Authenticity” really just translates to “honesty” or “integrity”. If a musician was 100% “authentic”, they’d have nothing standout to show. But the performance and branding of an artist can be sellout-y, shallow, and pander-y: or, it could have merit. A lot of people pursue music for the fame, money, or influence. It’s always refreshing to see artists truly walk the walk and not just talk the talk. In fact it should be the considered the standard to both perform and be “authentic”.

couldn’t agree more! i’m about to launch my brand and it has taken me years because i was originally going to launch a “real” brand (think rooted in reality of real life reccs by me) to a “fantasy” (a literal fantasy world online with its own characters) and it not only completely changed the way i see things, it’s also the most fun ive had as a creator in a long time and i truly hope it’s just as fun for the audience!!
