my dad and i were just talking about this the other day, it was either $4000 for surgery on my dogs eyes that only had a 40% chance of working, or $2000 removal of the eye. they made us feel bad when we couldnt do either, and they gave us eye drops. After a month, her eye was okay again.

Just want to update yall and clarify a few things! I went to 2 vets and talked with my primary vet so I had multiple answers and options. I’m lucky I know a vet tech who knows about my type of cats and has experience over 20 years so when I have questions for her she’s got my back! And it ended up being a cold my cat has and now he’s back to normal!!

CHANGE YOUR VET! I work in vet med. this isn’t how it’s supposed to be done. No, we wouldn’t be able to do all that testing for free, but we’d have a very open conversation about the possibilities of illness, and what every tests are for, give feedback on what the doctor thinks is the most important but YOU get to decide what is done. We don’t tell you what to do.

I worked for a vet who was SCARY smart but he used that to help people when they couldn't afford the care their set needed. He'd tell them super cheap alternatives and where to get meds filled for the cheapest.

My dogs legs stopped working randomly when he was just over a year, and he was in extreme pain so we took him to the vet and they charged 1000 out of pocket for inconclusive tests that told us nothing and they tried to put him down that night with no answers, and said we wouldn’t even be allowed to say good bye, my mom had to have a meltdown to get them to bring my dog out and h to then he was fine a few days later. We were never able to find out what happened

when i was told my cat was dying they said “we have some good news and some bad news” as in the bad news was that he would die without treatment and the good news was that treatment was available….for multiple thousands of dollars. i really liked my vet but that was a really tough way of putting it given that i was a college student and knew i wouldn’t be able to afford that

You’re so right, unfortunately vets aren’t magicians and need to do tests to know what’s going on, and tests cost money.

I took my cat to the vet recently and I had to take out a loan I cant afford to pay even with my pet insurance. it was at first estimated to be 15k now it was 7,424.84. I have been stressed and crying. they almost let him die because I said I cant afford it and pressured me to get a loan. they are nice people but honestly at thos point it should be a crime to make it to where people have to either give up their pet or let the pet die

Hey. Certified tech here. We don’t control the prices. We can’t control what policy is. Our hands are tied as well. The constant berating from the public like this is our fault is why the 💀 rate of techs & vets are so high.

I take my dog and cats to a holistic vet. They do regular vet services with real medicine as well as "holistic medicine." They're not owned by any big business. It's a small practice so they're open and honest about all of their services and will work with their patients' owners on payments if something major is needed. Maybe there's a place like that in your area?

i recommend finding a different vet if you haven't already. we thought my cat had an obstruction. the vet brought me back with my cat, went over what tests she wanted to run (exam, x-ray, blood tests), and gave me an estimate cost to sign before they did any treatment. i had to sign for each round of tests. i'm not sure why they'd go straight to surgery when there are many other options.

As a vet tech I feel so bad when people have experiences like this with vet clinics. We are advocates for patients, we treat what we can, we never judge, and we certainly shouldn’t be money grabbers. I’m lucky enough to work at a clinic that prioritizes patient care over making money. We’re usually able to work out a treatment plan that fits the budget. So sorry you had to go through this

Unfortunately, vets are expensive. Some offer payment plans or will supplement some of the cost. Luckily, I can put mine on my credit card and pay it off over time (my cats cleaned out my savings 💀). I pay full price so my vet can help other clients.

no but literally, I'm so tired of the "vet's don't work for the money, they're not greedy, bla bla bla", yeah they do, and yeah they are. there's no reason why they touch the cat's tummy, then x-ray it, find nothing, and it's gonna cost me 10000 SEK (about 1000 dollars). luckily, a few of the bigger corporations here in Sweden are currently being investigated because they cause SO many animals to die, when they easily could've treated them. they just didn't want to, or did the wrong think purposely. it's absolutely heinous
