In the 90s, doing tech support for internet company with dial up and a bunch of old people on windows 3.1. This was many years after windows 95. The amount of people who called me and I had to tell them to turn on the monitor was insane. NO it’s a cd tray not a cup holder, that’s why your cup doesn’t fit. Man… I was done.

I have worked in IT for decades, and I also do consulting for small businesses. I can say this is true but you also have to put yourself in their shoes. 1, they dont know tech, which freaks them out. Its like people who dont know cars and go to mechanics they feel sick to their stomach. 2, You haven't lived until you lose a report that took you weeks to create and fine tune with C level executives. When the Icon is missing, users that have gone through this relive that horrible experience, literal PTSD, so they freak out. Being understanding is also a big part of IT.

I understand not knowing everything about computers, but basic troubleshooting and name and know how to navigate a file explorer should be the norm. Like, you grow up at the same time that tech or you were already using a PC

the worst part in IT is trying to get a job after university. all the jobs are taken cos everyone does it cos they were told it’ll pay well. not anymore it don’t. now it’s overran so it’s low demand. low demand ≠ lower paying

It’s always the people who don’t know how to do their job without hand holding. Change one thing and unless they’re given a full 1on1 training session they melt down because they can’t think on their own

You can back up their quick access pins… I ALWAYS make sure to check how many quick pins users have cause some have an absurd amount. Takes 2 seconds and people really appreciate it.

CFO got mad I spent 20 minutes remotely trying to fix his check scanner to deposit a 500K check but wouldn't give me another 5 minutes to retest and update some things to get him up and running for the bank. 45 minute fix into a 5 day repair lol.... End users man.

the issue here is Microsoft being so destructive it doesn't care what it deletes, if you tell it to keep personal files, it only considers specific file formats "personal", and will nuke everything else, meanwhile on linux, the home folder is completely portable, you can have all your stuff anywhere on any system

In my company we are doing IT for other companys. No enduser support, we mostly talk to the IT people on the other side. I was at a hotel and the IT - I point out specifically, I mf T - guy didnt knew what a dhcp server and a access point is. The other guy didnt know what a vlan is 😭😭
