@davejorgenson: Hurricane forecasters will soon lose access to government satellite data vital to tracking hurricanes overnight and preventing what meteorologists once called a “sunrise surprise,” when a storm unexpectedly strengthens or shifts in the darkness. The Pentagon said Monday that it would wait until the end of July before it stops sharing the data — a month later than initially planned — in response to the high level of concern after the move was first announced last week. When the sun sets on a tropical cyclone, meteorologists typically continue to track its strength and development by observing microwave frequencies using Defense Department satellites. But the Pentagon said it will stop making that data publicly available “no later than” July 31, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration office said Monday. In the notice, defense officials cited concerns from Karen St. Germain, director of the earth science division at NASA. Scientists were initially given less than a week to prepare for the loss of the microwave data. But some meteorologists worry that July is still too soon, and experts have raised concerns that the loss of data could set forecasting capabilities back decades. Hmm I seem to remember reading this in project 2025 but I was assured by Trump voters that he had nothing to do with that… weird that he just keeps coincidentally implementing project 2025 bit by bit…

A reminder that "Alligator Alcatraz" is going to be in direct line of these hurricanes that they now won't see coming or prepare for. Mass casualties for whoever is held there is inevitable and they can just blame it on the weather.

They’ll use the ol’ “we didn’t see it coming” excuse when our new concentration camp in the Everglades has catastrophic flooding/gets torn to shreds and everyone dies — as if they weren’t the ones who kept us from seeing it coming

I'm a fifth generation Floridian. The importance of tracking hurricanes is a part of my DNA and I've watched the accuracy improve over seven decades. The more accurate the forecast means fewer casualties. The less accurate the forecast means more casualties. People's lives are at risk!

just last week texas was flooded it was a catastrophe, why would you take away the only way people can anticipate for this disasters when even with it a lot of people suffered from those?

As a weather nerd, SSMIS (the satellite system that's going to be taken offline) is genuinely one of the most important things we have that isn't the hurricane hunters. It helps us and the NHC determine a tropical cyclones strength at a more specific detail while not having Hurricane hunters. I have connection to some folks in the NWS/NHC and they share the same concerns as we do. It's genuinely killed morale and it doesn't help we are gonna get hit with even more losses if the 2026 Budget for NOAA is adopted
