@microdoseofart: Afewerk Tekle was more than just Ethiopia’s most beloved painter. He was a national icon, a stained glass master, a postage stamp designer, and the first African artist to have his work enter the permanent collection of the Uffizi Gallery. Born in 1932 under Italian occupation, Tekle originally studied engineering in England before his professors encouraged him to pursue the arts. He switched to the Slade School of Fine Art and became one of the first Black students there. When he returned home, he helped shape Ethiopia’s visual identity through murals, stamps, and stained glass masterpieces like The Total Liberation of Africa. He was knighted by Emperor Haile Selassie, and in 1964, became the first recipient of the Haile Selassie I Prize for Fine Arts.
