I like to imagine that Vergil could never keep up with Dante (he could never predict if he would turn left, right, run into a tree, or jump into the bushes). Dante was always running like crazy, and Vergil did his best to keep up with him, and when he was too far away, he would shout at Dante "wait!!" and Dante always, ALWAYS waited, grabbed him by the hand and dragged him along (and they fell into bushes, nettles or god knows what)
