Absolutely! That’s why the GIA will no longer grade Lab diamonds. They probably experienced severe pressure from DeBeers to grade only genuine diamonds

I don’t believe I’ve been influenced by anyone on natural vs lab. In my mind, I’ve always likened it to an original piece of art vs a print. I consider the original art, or in this case natural diamonds, superior.

As someone who’s worked at debeers and consulted many years with them. This is 100% true. They even bought lab grown diamond companies to sell lab grown diamonds cheap at a loss to create the impression it’s basically costume jewellery and if he buys you that he doesn’t really love you

One of the first lessons you learn in MBA school is how Debeers marketed diamonds as precious/rare and created an artificial scarcity when in fact diamonds are neither rare nor precious. But you can’t teach those who are stoopid 😂

Real question, and I love the idea of lab diamonds, it’s what we’ve chosen for my engagement ring, but I had always planned to invest my money in natural rubies, sapphires, and emeralds as a way to sort of protect the value of my money overtime while also having a beautiful piece of jewelry. Do you see this the lab grown market significantly harming the value of other natural precious stones?

common ground here: both natural and lab diamonds require mining ⛏️(you still need minerals to grow labs). Naturals cost more because they take millions of years to form and the industry has to find them. Labs are real diamonds too, just grown faster. But once you go over 3 carats, people might ask if it’s lab-grown. Not good or bad, just what I’ve seen.

I feel that as a fine jewelry retailer you shouldn’t put down natural diamonds just because you have recently made money selling lab grown. If natural diamond crashes lab grown will go down with it.
