A chemistry teacher at Volcano Vista High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, allegedly brought two swords โ a katana-style sword and a rapier-style sword โ into her classroom. She instructed students to rearrange desks to create a fighting ring and set a timer for two-minute duels. One student suffered a severe injury, including severed nerves and tendons, when struck by a classmate with the katana-style sword. The injured student and her family are suing the teacher, the assistant principal, and Albuquerque Public Schools. The lawsuit alleges that the teacher created a dangerous situation and that the injury was a foreseeable outcome. The teacher was fired in July 2022. The school district has not commented on the pending litigation. The teacher allegedly initially told students the swords were props. The injured student has suffered permanent injuries, including difficulty with basic tasks. The assistant principal reportedly indicated on an incident report that the injury did not violate school rules, according to the lawsuit.
