E hoa, just walk beside your babies on their journey, at their pace and yours. You don’t need to be ahead —just be present, gentle with yourself, and grow together. Kia kaha.

not shocking at all I had the benefit of reo and my brother didn't and it shows in our relationship back home and the reason why that is coz of colonial narcissistic people who beat the language out of my parents

That's the effects of colonisation different things were stripped from us over the years 1 of them being our whakapapa because we were looked down upon and everything Maori was swept under the carpet by pakeha instilling there beliefs just like the current government unfortunately

Haha bro I have the exact same story. My daughter pushed me to start learning my whakapapa. 41 - white as upbringing but I was loved, had a great childhood so it’s difficult to wade through. I started learning reo and connecting, long process

You’re definitely not alone - urbanisation played a key role in that. Awesome that your kids’ Kura is encouraging you to take the journey - mauri ora bro.

As a blonde haired blue eyed Maaori, yes 😅 I’m 50/50, also no connection to that side of my heritage. Slowly trying to reconnect, but finding it particularly hard because I definitely don’t loo the part

My wife spent the first 5 years living in Aoteroa and then was brought back to Australia. She's lost most of her Te reo Māori she learnt growing up. We as a family are embraced it and helping her get back to her roots

it's not your fault bro this is the effects of colonization. mass amounts of people being disconnected from whenua and culture. dont let anyone tell you you're an imposter or not Māori enough. you are enough. no matter how much milk is in the coffee it's still coffee.

Me too 💯. I'm 50 and been discovering my whakapapa. I've now worked out my pepeha - marae and iwi. Works out my great grandfather back a few - signed the Declaration of Independence. If only I had asked when my grandparents were alive to tell em. Keep going. It'll be different for your kids. 😊

This is the start of a beautiful haerenga for you and your whānau. Even if your whakapapa feels a bit unknown right now, there’s something really special about your tamariki being the reason you’re choosing to explore it. One day, you’ll visit your marae together, and spend nights learning your whakapapa as a whānau, these moments will become core memories your kids carry with them forever. They’ll grow up knowing exactly who they are and where they come from. They’ll be proud of it. And when they share it with their own tamariki one day, it’ll be because you started this journey, you made that possible. Look forward to following along, thank you for sharing what many Māori feel. 👏🥰
