The joke is so pivotal to understanding their relationship. Batman is the man who already made it across the building. Joker is the man who is too scared to cross. Batman’s offer is the beam of light. Joker saying it’s too late meaning. I don’t trust you to keep the light on and I can’t walk across that beam anyway.

The genius of this scene is the joke is a metaphor for Batman and Joker. Batman is the man who jumped across no problem, Joker is the one scared to jump. For Joker, it's hopeless because he is scared to jump, he doesn't trust Batman's help, and he can't walk across light anyway.

This movie is based on a comic with the same name: “The Killing Joke,” it not only tells the origin story of the Joker but within this even it conveys a hidden message the Joker is telling Batman; that all he ever wanted before he died was to make someone anyone laugh even just once at one of his jokes. In the comic, the last panels show that they share a laugh together until Batman kills the Joker fulfilling his final wish.

Growing up means realizing Joker is just misunderstood and him saying jokes and laughing is a type of defense so he doesn’t get sad about the true reality of the world and how evil it gets so he’s becomes evil when in fact, he’s just protecting himself from the world with jokes and laughing….😮💨

The thing that's so amazing about about his joke is that he read it on the morning paper and when Batman started yapping he just started thinking about the newspaper and remembered the funny joke he read earlier and decided to tell Batman, and Batman also thought it was really funny and started laughing too

For people who dont get it😇 . The Joker is saying “Im too far gone, too insane. I cant be saved and trying to save me is ridiculous”. Just like how “walking” on a beam of light is ridiculous., because it cant work and it wont work. Even if the light is coming from good intentions

The thing is that Batman is just as insane as the joker. There is a part where Harley Quinn is able to look at his memories. She looks at one moment and another and another and they are all of his parents dying. He lives in that constant moment
