Narrated A’isha (RA):
“The people used to fast on the day of Ashura in the pre-Islamic days, and the Prophet ﷺ fasted on that day. Later, when Ramadan became obligatory, the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Whoever wants to fast on the day of Ashura can do so, and whoever wants to can leave it.’”
(Sahih Bukhari)
This hadith shows that fasting on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura) was initially encouraged and even practiced by the Prophet ﷺ, but after the obligation of fasting in Ramadan, it became optional for the Muslims.
