@james_e_jose_portugal: The Portuguese Are Very Candid. In the U.S., if someone said “you’ve gotten fatter,” you’d probably cut them out of your life. In Portugal? It’s just Tuesday. After a few years of living here, I’ve realized that level of candidness—commenting on someone’s weight isn’t necessarily rude—it’s often just normal. Especially with family. From “estás mais magro” to “comeste bem, hein?”, these remarks come from a place of cultural directness. Many Portuguese people say what’s on their mind—without sugarcoating, especially with people they love. #portuguesa🇵🇹#vidaemportugal #tiktokportugal #portugaltiktok #portugal🇵🇹
Portugal passou tempos difíceis, com muita fome. Ser gordinho não é um insulto, é ter dinheiro para comida. .. é quase um elogio. Isto dito pela geração mais velha, claro.

we bought a big house in a Portuguese village. we're not from there. I'm black, my husband is Polish white (visibly not Portuguese). we're the talk of the village. a neighbour comes in while I'm on the garden (uninvited) and starts asking questions, including: are you rich? did you inherite the money? are you Brazilian? are these your kids (2 Polish teenagers)? all while she also tells me about her life including some private stuff about her brother. in the space of 10 minutes. 😂😂

I actually don’t agree at all with this as a Portuguese. Relatively speaking other cultures are much more direct, such as northern european cultures. If you compare to the americas, sure. Also “estas mais gordinho” many times isn’t meant to be even honesty. In some places with family it can be either a compliment or even a slight throw down. Speaking about peoples weight is extremely common. Often times older women will say this every single time. Mine and friends know that the likelihood of your grandmother commenting on your weight is almost 100%. Many times not even accurately. i will say one thing though, you almost only comment on weight with family or close friends. If they say this to you then they definitely trust you, so congrats on that!

When the Portuguese speak from the heart, it is not to harm but to build. Their words may be sharp, but they are the tools with which they carve dignity into their relationships

I brought my dog and the first thing I heard when I landed here from a Portuguese lady that my dog was fat. He is a husky. I never seen not talked to her before this interaction 😂 she came and said “o cão está gordinho”.

and sometimes very passive-aggressive, specially if you're a woman🫤
but yeah, "gordinho" isn't an insult here at all, it's actually affectionate, PT has been through tough times and feeding people is a love language for us so that's just saying they look happy and well-fed

É típico dos portugueses! Irrita, enerva, mas não há nada a fazer! Acham que têm direito a fazê-lo! Eu não o faço, o que não impede que o façam a mim! 😂😂😂😂

Why would family “announce” we are coming by? What- like an appointment? That’s for doctors. Not family.
