ohh no no no.. first you make them hateable.. the worst character ever.. but add charms.. like.. maybe he is the villain. but he's funny.. and then.. add redemption.. which make the reader switch opinion.. also then.. top it all with a background plot twist.. why he became like that.. finally.. lastly.. have him killed because of the main protagonist.. let's say he saved the protagonist after he stubbornly went ahead despite the risk.m i assure you, the readers would cry on it, even hate the mc instead

For me the most devastating death is the "I still want to live" character while they slowly and painfully die with their bodies cradling in their love one's arms. Like imagine them begging their own body to survive and forcing their eyes open, muttering to themselves "I still want to live. I want to watch all of you grow until we can't. I want to get married, have a child, and explore the world. I don't want to leave yet, please help me" but know they wouldn't survive yet clung to that tiny sliver of hope, and their loved ones can't do anything else but watch as the light faded from their eyes. Yes, that makes me sob the hardest
