I legitimately studied Korean, Japanese, & Philippine history and culture in University and despite my knowledge I still wouldn’t write or create content using culture I’m not intimately familiar with 😭

Glad to see people speaking on this topic! its always a good discussion to have with any culture. I am confused in why you've tagged KPDH though, well besides views. the creator is korean and has talked a lot about their process and the notes of elements in the story. as some of the comments talk about the movie and also as the main search is kpdh rant I just think its important not to potentially steer ppl in possible wrong direction. though you yourself did not say it was that ppl who won't have bothered to do research could get the wrong idea and dismiss the work and talent of crew and cast of who historically dont get exposer. again not to discount this conversation it is very important!!! Just making sure it is done in the right context and without closing the doors of proper critique.

Don't understand stealing culture. I was inspired by the film but then started thinking about how it would play out elsewhere. America's line probably less shame and more the line between pride and humility.

as German American I agree it's like if a Korean of Spanish assisteral person wrote a story about a German knight or royal family. it's wrong cause you have no connection with those people or history with them you will get things wrong. you can love things from all cultures 😊🥰 cause there is beauty in all cultures but don't pretend to be those people just cause there culture is popular.

I know this is a bit off topic but do you have any suggestions for books with the same vibes that are written by Koreans and people that have experienced Korean culture that protray it accurately?

i really don't understand why people try to write books about cultures that are not their own ever?? like sure, include them with proper research, but to tell stories focused on that culture when it isn't your story to tell??? i'll write fanfic of things i enjoy to my heart's content but telling the original stories of another culture is so NOT my place as a white person. 😭

I’m working on a fanfic for the movie, but I’m trying to do my research and be respectful. I’m a little nervous to add anything that’s not in the movie

This is why I will not dub. I want to enjoy it at the fullest and I’ll just read the subtitles.

so, question is it considered disrespectful to make main characters that are smth other than our own ethnicity, bcuz then I'm stuck just writing about Mexican main characters then.

I’d like to ask why it’s harmful. Is it something that they are getting wrong with the culture or is it writing about it in particular?

you gave me a little scare at first until I read some comments because I thought you meant fanfic. thought I had been being insensitive to enjoy them but we're talking the people trying to make actual original content and stuff

This is not to be confused with having a diverse cast of characters and some are Korean who talk about their culture! I’m seeing a lot of people (mostly on 🧵s) confusing the two.

I understand the sentiment of it being disrespectful or getting things wrong. I understand her point of “I can’t tell you what to write but you can’t tell people how to react” and that’s a good sentiment if it just stops at reactions and not trying to cancel someone’s career. People can say I find it wrong without pushing the agenda of if you buy it/support it you’re a (insert insult word here). There are plenty of authors that do loads of research before they write about a topic or maybe they’ve had a passion for Korean culture since they were young even though they didn’t have a chance to live it. Would mainstream authors brining the subject to the masses as a whole not bring more popularity/awareness to the culture and smaller less known authors as a result? To gatekeep subjects of novels, would be to say no one can write about anything they did not personally live or have a connection to without receiving backlash which pretty much leaves fantasy fiction as the only topic and even then would need to be careful and certain religion and regions were the original fey and such depending on what you use. (Sorry for long post)

I don’t agree with Kpop though since Kpop actually derives from Black American hiphop, R&B, rap, and pop culture. Even the ones at the top credit black American music with creation of Kpop. You can’t talk about Kpop origins without mentioning Black American music. Am I to say you can’t write about Kpop history because you’d have to dive in and write a bit about black American music history and since your not Blaxk or American you can’t write about it.
