They had different people working on the games back then who knew game design very well. Now it's just a bunch of randos who only know how to monetize stuff and that's it. Just watch the development videos on BF3 and you'll see how much more competent people were.

I bought 2042 when it was $10 and I got my enjoyment out of it, but I don’t think they really know how to make a good battlefield game anymore. The last few haven’t really done it for me.
