The divisiveness of this convo is scary. The CEO has been there/with essence since 2020. The decline of essence fest is “Africans” fault not the state of the economy?! Weird but I digress anything to keep us colonized and “othering” each other.

Caroline wanga hasn’t been the Chief of DEI at target since 2020 when she assumed her role at essence. Target started being boycotted in 2024. Whatever Target has going on atm has absolutely nothing to do with her. It’s like you purposely ignore details to create your own victim narrative.

The word is that by 2030 FBA will be on the bottom of everyone else. So it begins.

Growing up, nobody wanted to even be associated with being Black aka Blavk American. “I’m not black, I’m Jamaican”. WE popularized the term and NOW they wanna claim it. I’m over it.

But it’s so funny because, most people not from America (meaning born here) — who are apparently brown and black don’t want to claim African Americanism. That’s the real gag.

Stop with the diaspora war comments! Africans, Caribbeans, South Americans, and etc. get to celebrate their culture no problem ALONE with no wants of AA culture present! In the diaspora I only ever see everybody else dislike AA simply because THEY THINK WE LACK CULTURE or don’t know who we are BUT WE DO! We have our own culture that everybody keeps trying to mute because they think they are the real “black” or not even black at all! Y’all don’t connect with us until we try to connect alone which is weird! Because we not coming to carnival or an African fest telling yall to stop the Afrobeats, or put on a nice “black American” outfit… it’s just weird that somehow we can’t do it alone like everybody else! In any race or culture honestly!

i thought I was racist for saying this but I hate when other black diasporas take over Black American culture. They will never truly understand our struggles which is why I feel icky when they make racial jokes thinking we buddy buddy just because we have the same skin

Very true. I haven’t seen any African American creators at essence fest. The black ones I’ve seen are from African countries

My thing is, if other groups are so "innovative", why can't they take those innovations back to their countries and start their own. Why latch on to our stuff and then try to change it thinking we should conform to their takeover.

the essence fest needs to be rebranded. if that's where it's heading then it needs to be called black essence and included ALL black culture across the diaspora. and create a new festival that celebrates AFRICAN AMERICAN Culture and call it the soulann fest. and have only US strictly in charge of it no exceptions. no other race or culture in charge or having a deciding influence there.

Many black ppl within the diaspora do not see the importance of these space we cultivated because they were not here to watch us from scratch hardships on this land design these spaces so that we could feel seen loved and heard and now they just see it as a space to capitalize on now that the roots have been planted . And because so many hate the west totally get it they say the only way to be inclusive is to sideline yourself for others

Samuel L. Jackson questioned why a British actor like Daniel Kaluuya was cast in Get Out, a film centered around the Black American experience. They dragged Samuel saying “he’s black too” i bet they get it now.

The Essence festival was started by BAW for BAW. It turned into an apparatus used by disporas to cosplay as us to get their foot in the door - and now they use it to elevate themselves over BA. BA need to learn that EVERYONE targets us. EVERYONE!! - even those with the same hues from across ponds.

then stop inviting and casting non-american black people to these events and in your media? African/latin/caribbean countries have their events, festivals, and media. But in the same breath, you can't desire AA media to contain nonAAs (Caribbean, Latin, African). this includes many well loved black music artists (Nicki, Rihanna, Drake, Cardi, Weeknd, etc.). People will complain but they will get over it in due time.
