The Director of ICE just argued that immigrants in sanctuary cities are more vulnerable to crime because they’re afraid to report it, and that makes everyone less safe. That’s partly true. When people are afraid of the police, they are less likely to report crime, and that does make communities less safe. However, instead of asking, how do we make immigrants feel safe reporting crime, they are targeting and deporting the very people he just acknowledged are here for a better life. The ones at their job sites, the ones doing the backbreaking labor nobody else will do, the ones at their kid’s graduation, or the ones taking their children to daycare. If you’re paying attention, you know the list goes on. Is it any wonder that immigrants or minorities wouldn’t trust law enforcement to protect them? Sanctuary city policies are grounded in the legal principle that local law enforcement is not required to carry out federal immigration duties, and in fact, doing so can violate constitutional rights and undermine public safety. Despite that, several states are introducing or have introduced legislation to deputize local officers as immigration agents, effectively turning every traffic stop into a possible deportation, like they tried with my own client earlier this year. And now, thanks to the budget bill, ICE is set to expand again, from around $10 billion today to an additional $75+ billion in supplemental funding through 2029, and as much as $168 billion to $170 billion total for immigration and border enforcement over the next several years. We are funneling more money into detention and enforcement instead of real solutions like legal representation, community safety, or fair policy reform. You know, things that would actually improve all of our lives. ICE would become the most heavily funded law enforcement agency in U.S. history, larger than the FBI, DEA, and Bureau of Prisons combined. This and the twisted propaganda they spew is alarming. I will continue to to call it out.
