😭Just to clarify for anyone confused—these cuts already happened.
On February 27, 2025, nearly 880 NOAA employees were laid off, including staff at the National Hurricane Center and Storm Prediction Center. That’s not a proposal—it happened. Weather balloon launches were canceled, and forecasting was disrupted.
In March, NOAA removed its “Radar Next” program page and ended Spanish-language weather alerts after letting the translation contract expire.
Then on April 11, the White House released its FY2026 budget proposal, cutting NOAA from $6.1B to $4.5B, eliminating the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research and defunding all climate, ocean, and weather research labs—including the National Severe Storms Lab.
Yes, the National Weather Service’s base funding stayed, but without staff, research, or tools to support it, the entire system is weaker.
So yes—people were laid off, programs were erased, and forecasting already took a hit. It’s not just “in the works.” It’s happening now.
