For any uninformed people, the term “Snipe Hunting” is something traditionally found in scout camps. A group of people take someone uninformed on a “Snipe Hunt”. A “Snipe” is a supposed rare creature, the pranksters tell the victim. They will make him sit in one spot and call out for this supposed “Snipe”. Eventually the person will realize they were tricked and move on.

From what I've gathered and seems to be the most accurate is that he left his son in the forest waiting for an animal that was never actually coming and when the son realized that he had to find his way home. Btw for the people complaining about the cross hairs I highly doubt any father would aim a rifle at their child.

My great uncle said his buddies dad used to to something similar but “come out to this girl’s ranch I’m with her friend and she wants to meet you”. Only to send the scared freshman running with some birdshot up into the air when he was walking up to the door. This was Odessa in the 60s so pretty much whatever went.
