It’s not that the people who believe in the Christian faith have ignored the things you mention. But, there is context that we have to look at to understand what is being said. When we talk about God being good, we’re not saying that he doesn’t punish sin, and the people who commit sin. We have to understand that God has the authority to kill anyone for any reason. He’s God! And, as he said, “Vengeance is mine”. Ok. Well, let’s talk about the idea of sin. When we sin, it’s not just a small matter. It’s a big deal. God is a perfect being, and any sin we commit, even a tiny little sin, is a big deal to Him. And the problem isn't just that we’re sinning, but that we are ignoring God.
Imagine if you had a very close friend, and your friend kept doing things you hated. If you told that person, “I love you, but stop doing that”, and he just ignores you, that would hurt, wouldn’t In the Old Testament, God had his chosen people, the Israelites. He gave them many commandments to follow, and they had to obey. When they didn’t obey, they experienced the consequences of their sins. God doesn’t have to be good in the way that we think of good. God does not need to abide to human rules.
If God were like us, he wouldn’t be God. He’s God because he’s different than us. We think we know what good means, but we really don’t.
