the record labels don’t push belters and ballads anymore. mariah carey still sells albums and tickets so no one can tell me gen z doesn’t like belters. but record labels don’t push that kind of singer anymore 🤷🏾♀️

hmmm idk I think the relatability is a HUGE factor as to why the singers today are popular. Hearing someone amazingly gifted instantly creates a level of distance from the art because you feel like you aren't the same as your fave. I think people are becoming fans of newer artists because they like their personalities a lot and lyrics. Yeah it could be seen as a 'old person' take, but young folks want whatever is relatable to them first and foremost.

It’s also so out of touch because there were plenty of mediocre singers who rose to fame in the past as well!!

Vibe or not but eliminating music education is a huge part of the reason a MAJORITY don’t have musicality. Bc this has been a long time coming. The younger artists I work with WANT to have the records of GEN X specifically more than even wanting millenial demo music.

As a gen z I think it’s also partly the fact that gen z grew up in a time where listening to music is so readily accessible and portable, and because of that our music tastes kinda mesh together different aspects of different genres, creating different music expectations to millennials who didn’t have that. Now RnB and soul has to be catchy like pop to get a lot of gen z’s attention, and a lot of old school talented singers just don’t have that sound

Chappel Roans meteoric rise to popularity largely based on her vocals (and aesthetic) is a pretty good example to the contrary of the “no technique” thesis.

I was just saying this as well! I am a Gen X and even though I like singers that can belt such as Mariah and others that I grew up with. I have always been drawn more to the singers that didn’t belt, those are my favorite. Even back then we had a variety of singers, I would go from listening to Mariah to Jewel.

there is more to music than just vocals though. so many great singers of the past didn't make it because all they had to offer was their voice. no interesting lyrics, no interesting production, nothing just singing. Lana isn't successful for her vocals she's successful for her lyrics and musical style. new gen seems to be more interested in what an artist is actually saying more than just how they sound. the most recent examples I can think of are beyonce and Mariah and that's from the 90s. also people are less interested in the manufactured pop star and more into the kind of artist who's rise you can actually track. artists with stories and motives. Diana Ross would be considered an industry plant by today's standards. things have changed

Yes, I get that, but often, I need a good belt that lasts one minute or some resonance.

As a music teacher this is spot on. But it’s always been that way. Artists could sing back in the day but their hits were vibes first, they HAD to be also great singers bc we didn’t have melodyne and endless plugins in production like today

don't know myself anymore :
was thinking about this... if people want to hear great vocals there's entire genres like gospel, soul, Broadway, opera and so forth

I’m a Gen-z, I love my non-singers and powerhouse vocalists equally but a lot of our artists aren’t powerhouse vocalists in any way. The mediocre, niche musicians have oversaturated the industry

As an older Gen Z who was raised by a Boomer mother, I can say that there have been singers who have come to popularity who could not hold a note. It's foolish to make it a current generation’s problem. The discourse about lack of vocalists in mainstream entertainment had been discuss for decades.
